The paper addresses social innovation both as a mode and as a means of social change. It draws on the recent developments in the sociology of repair to offer a critical reading of pro-innovation discourse on the level of EU policy. It is argued that the practices and concepts of social innovation on the level of EU policy can be fruitfully reframed within a repair narrative, whereas the proliferation of the buzzword social innovation warrants a closer look from an innovation studies perspective. Connecting both repair and innovation studies thus offers a more nuanced understanding of current societal transformations and adds to the conceptual discussion of social change and social order.

Digital health data and devices have become increasingly popular in the last two decades. This resonates with research on the expansion of health data ecosystems, the platformization of health issues, the rise of consumerism in medicine, and the movement of big tech into healthcare. The proliferation of popular health devices, such as activity trackers and smart watches, however, does not simply reinforce existing dynamics of medicalization or economization. The expansion of digital health data opens up a contested space in local settings, such as doctor-patient interactions, where data and devices are evaluated and negotiated, depending on and varying by symptom, medical discipline, and type of patient. We focus on these negotiations by analyzing how popular apps and devices create instances of problematic popularity, where popular devices and personal data conflict with professional authority. We suggest three distinct types of popularization of digital health data and devices - professionalization, personalization, and public attention. Our perspective foregrounds the importance of popularization as a practice for enabling and constraining the expansion of health-related data into local healthcare settings.

Much research has been conducted on how social media platforms are used as outlets of taste expression, displaying cultural preferences acquired outside the platforms. This research largely builds on the cultural sociology of Pierre Bourdieu and his analysis of taste as a medium of social distinction. We propose to shift the emphasis from the study of taste expression to an analysis of taste making on social media. This shift is occasioned by broader cultural transformations since the 1990s as well as developments on social media since the late 2000s. We see that rather than merely performing a taste learned elsewhere, users cooperatively develop sensitivities on social media platforms, constituting practices of joint observation, evaluation, and distinction. We call this the triangle of taste in which subjects, objects, and media mutually co-produce each other.

We focus on collaborative activities that engage computer graphics designers and social scientists in systems design processes. Our conceptual symmetrical account of technology design and theory development is elaborated as a mode of mutual engagement occurring in an interdisciplinary trading zone, where neither discipline is placed at the service of the other and nor do disciplinary boundaries dissolve. To this end, we draw on analyses of mutual engagements between computer and social scientists stemming from the fields of computer-supported cooperative work, human−computer interaction, and science and technology studies (STS). We especially build on theoretical work in STS concerning information technology in health care and extend recent contributions from STS with respect to the modes of engagement and trading zones between computer and social sciences. We conceive participative digital systems design as a form of inquiry for the analysis of cooperative work settings, particularly when social science becomes part of design processes. We illustrate our conceptual approach using data from an interdisciplinary project involving computer graphics designers, sociologists, and neurosurgeons with the aim of developing patient-centered visualizations for clinical cooperation on a hospital ward.

We discuss two methodological challenges for ethnographies of organisations that have become increasingly relevant, namely issues of materiality and change. Both have been addressed separately in the past and we revisit the arguments made so far in order to bring them together. The two methodological challenges are connected to empirical developments and theoretical advances in organisation studies and beyond. We argue that materiality and change can be taken up by ethnographic research of organisations in different manners, but that they have to be addressed in order to gain a deeper understanding in current processes of organising. We also see these challenges as two interrelated themes that may help to make different organisational ethnographies comparable.
